Nicky Hayden had some difficulty finding a good rhythm during qualifying for the Assen TT, but a change to a different shock setting helped to improve his feeling with the bike near the end of the session and to finish with the ninth-best time.

After yesterday’s very positive initial outing in the rain during free practice, Valentino Rossi had only two hours to set up his new bike on a dry track and he wasn’t able to replicate yesterday’s performance. Tomorrow he’ll have to start from the eleventh spot on the grid.

Nicky Hayden:
“This morning we were trying to learn the step 2 chassis, but with the rain, we never got to compare back-to-back with the step 1 in similar conditions so, for this afternoon, we went with what we knew. We struggled a bit at the beginning of qualifying, and then when we put in the soft tyres, we also changed to a different shock setting that helped put some temperature in the tyre. I started getting a better feel and going faster, and like always, it would have been nice to get a few more laps. It’s not why we’re on the third row, but when Capirossi crashed, they should have red-flagged the session, because he was in the run-off area of a fast place. We’ve had just about every condition this weekend, so we’ll see what we get tomorrow. It could be a wild race.”

Valentino Rossi:
“We’re disappointed with qualifying because we had started quite well yesterday, so clearly, we expected things to go better today. We had a decent session this morning, but we weren’t able to improve, so we’ll start eleventh. The rear of the GP11.1 is better than the previous version, but we weren’t able to find a setup that allowed us to bring the tyres up to temperature, and at the moment, that’s making it difficult to find the feeling I need to ride hard and be strong on corner entry. I don’t think we’ve yet learned how to properly adjust the bike, and that’s something we knew could happen since we have so little time available. Still, this all helps us to gather experience for the future, and we have some ideas for tomorrow’s warm-up session that we hope will help us go faster in the race.”

Motorcyclists had the highest rate of alcohol use among all vehicle types in crashes, motorcycles counting 37 percent, next to passenger cars at 27 percent, and sport utility vehicles at 27 percent.Lastly, operating a motorcycle requires much more coordination than driving a passenger vehicle. Your reflexes are slowed, your vision is impaired, and you are less coordinated.

For all of the efforts of law enforcement, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and motorcycle groups themselves to lower the incidence of riding while under the influence, the amount of motorcyclist fatalities rose from 1998 to 2000, after it had been declining from 1993 to 1997.

Additional efforts are being made to reduce the number of accidents related to riding and alcohol use. This includes making people aware of the risks and having them take responsibility for themselves and others on the road.

When dirt bike racing was in it’s infancy riders wore whatever was available to protect themselves. Open faced helmets, Jofa pants, leather protection… as the protective equipment was not specifically made for dirt bike racing, riders looked more like confused hockey playing bikies than dirt bike racers!

As the sport (best sport in the world mind you :) became more popular, the growth was then able to sustain ‘parallel’ or complimentary manufacturing industries. Companies like JT USA, Sinisalo etc. could now focus primarily on making only motocross gear.

More money was now being pushed into research and development of motocross gear, sponsorship of riders and marketing programs. More emphasis was being placed on style so colour was added to gear to match dirt bike colourings or just to be outrageous and different. Pink was big mid eighties (I did not say it was always in good taste).

Body armour moved to be worn over the top of race jerseys therefore they became more stylised to appeal to users. In itself becoming a fashion statement, but was researched and tested to also be practical and offer maximum comfort. Today’s body armour has ‘floating’ shoulder cups as well as flexible back and side panels to cater for both sitting and standing positions when riding. Can come in a range of colour options including clear as well as built in kidney belts on some models.

Race pants received there own special treatment made out of heavy duty nylon with doubled stitching, extra room in the butt to cater for the crouched/sitting riding position as well as cordura, kevlar and leather panels in high wear areas such as the seat and knees. Spandex panels are used to allow for movement where necessary. A quality race pant will offer extra room in the knee area to allow for knee braces that more and more riders are wearing.

Motocross gloves offer better feel for the rider with less padding in the palms. Enduro gloves can be the opposite with more padding to give greater comfort for longer rides.

Elbow protection can be found in a “sleeve” that also covers the forearms. Knee/shin guards are lighter as well as stronger and some hinder ‘lateral’ movement of the knee (gone are the days of using skateboarders protection). Although with the onset of lightweight, composite materials it is possible to have the ultimate in protection with knee braces.

All this protection would mean nothing if you cannot see. So it is very VERY important to properly protect one of your greatest assets (as well as one of the five senses) in your sight. Different goggle manufacturers have their own registered names for their lenses, but they basically mean the same thing – scratch resistant, shatterproof protection for your eyes.

So next time you go for a dirtbike ride, dress in the latest motocross gear and be comforted in the knowledge that you have minimized risk to your body as much as possible. That will allow you to focus on what you are there for… enjoying the ride!

These gloves are CE approved to provide you with ultimate safety features. With a neoprene cuff, breathable mesh construction and reinforced thumb, palm and inset your hand should feel well protected inside such a motocross glove.

Time to visit getgeared.co.uk, which has a number of motocross and dirtbike armor options. With moisture dispersing polyester main body, plus pinhole mesh inside the elbows which offer upper body airflow and multi panel padded elbows follow you’re every move. Another comfortable vented rear paneled jersey from fox, but designed specifically for the female figure.

The bargain of the day however had to be from motorcycle-superstore.com. We came across a pair of O'Neal Racing (2008 Model)A-10 pit bike Pants for $29.99. Naturally it was in a closeout sale, but great if you need a cheap item of dirt bike gear. With 600 Denier Cordura construction and zippered legs – to turn them into shorts. They are more casual wear than track pants, but still incorporate flexible ribbed Spandura panels and four tuff pockets.

So as you can see we had a worthwhile day searching for cheap motocross gear on the web, and if you take our recommendations you should find something of great value and at a cut-price.

MotoGP 2011: Class Applications for 2012 Season

Eleven teams comprising 16 riders have now been invited to participate in the next stage of selection for the 2012 MotoGP World Championship.

On April 30th 2011, the FIM announced that 13 teams containing 21 riders, not currently participating in the MotoGP class, had been provided with terms and conditions for participation in 2012. Those teams were invited to confirm their interest and submit comprehensive details of their plans for participation to IRTA. The deadline was Saturday May 14th.

During the Le Mans event the applications were reviewed by IRTA and Dorna. Eleven teams comprising 16 riders have now been invited to participate in the next stage of selection. These teams have until Friday June 3rd, to lodge a security deposit with IRTA.

At the Catalunya Grand Prix Dorna and IRTA will decide which teams will then be offered a contract of participation for 2012. Teams applying to participate in the CRT category will also need to have their application approved by the Grand Prix Commission members. Following the Catalunya Grand Prix a list of accepted teams will be published.

I start my first session with the traction control set at level six and then reduce by one for each lap until I’m down at level one. n less than one month’s time the first Official MotoGP Test of the year takes place at Sepang as the fight for the final 800cc title gets underway. Here, motogp.com previews the forthcoming season.

The 2010 campaign is still fresh in the memory but already the focus has turned to 2011. With the first Official Test in preparation for the new season coming immediately after the final round of the year in Valencia back in November, the excitement at the final 800cc season before the introduction of a 1000c engine capacity limit in 2012 is merely adding to the anticipation that the 2011 season will be one to savour.

Looking at the leading contenders for the 2011 MotoGP title the defending World Champion Jorge Lorenzo will be at the forefront, as he aims to underline his status as the new dominant force. Having been so consistent in 2010 and finishing 16 of the 18 rounds on the podium on his M1, the factory Yamaha rider displayed a level of maturity that was vastly improved in comparison to his previous premier class campaigns.

As Lorenzo opts for continuity with Yamaha two of his chief rivals ride with new teams in 2011. Casey Stoner becomes a factory HRC rider and his display in the Valencia Test hinted at what was an immediate affinity with the RC212V, whilst Valentino Rossi has filled the Australian’s seat at Ducati as an all-Italian match-up adds to the fascinating grid. Rossi may not have enjoyed as comfortable an introduction to his new machine as Stoner did to the Honda, but such is the nine-time World Champion’s proven track record he can be expected to be pushing hard on the Desmosedici come March 20th at Losail.

Along with Lorenzo, Dani Pedrosa will hope to benefit from the stability of remaining with the same set-up in 2011, and for the 2010 runner-up it will be his sixth season on the factory Honda team. Having been Lorenzo’s longest challenger until injury struck towards the end of 2010, Pedrosa’s sights will be firmly set on a first premier class title.

As much as the ‘top four’ continue to be spoken of in one bracket, the gap behind them is being closed all the time and there are a number of riders who will not only be confident of breaking into that elite, but who have proven they have the ability to run at the front.

Andrea Dovizioso enjoyed his best premier class season to date in 2010 and will remain on the factory Honda team, Ben Spies was Rookie of the Year and earned a factory Yamaha ride as well as serving notice of his talent in what was his debut year, and of course Nicky Hayden is a former World Champion who displayed a much-improved feeling on the Desmosedici in his second season with Ducati. Marco Simoncelli was also highly impressive in his first campaign in the MotoGP class, and in 2011 will ride a factory supported RC212V on the San Carlo Honda Gresini team.

Colin Edwards has a wealth of MotoGP experience and will continue with the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 team, whilst Loris Capirossi and Randy de Puniet are both seasoned campaigners and will compete to adjust quickest to the Desmosedici of the Pramac Racing team. Returning for their second seasons respectively and eager to make progress will be Héctor Barberá (Paginas Amarillas Aspar), Álvaro Bautista (Rizla Suzuki) and Hiroshi Aoyama (San Carlo Honda Gresini).

Great interest will also be stoked by the introduction of three new riders to the category. Toni Elías, winner of the inaugural Moto2 World Championship, makes his return to the premier class with LCR Honda whilst rookies Cal Crutchlow (Monster Yamaha Tech 3) and Karel Abraham (Cardion ab Motoracing) make the move from superbikes and Moto2 respectively.

The 'non-news' about Valentino Rossi moving to Ducati was finally made official after the Brno Grand Prix. Yes, ever since quote-machine Hervé Poncharal, Yamaha Tech3 manager let slip that his rider Ben Spies was on his way to the Yamaha factory team back in June, the Rossi to Ducati story was a non-event.

Poncharal, whose team is part-funded by series organisers Dorna to ensure some national interest in the Le Mans GP, had two seats available in his make-weight team for 2011, one of which looks set to be filled by Yamaha WSB rider Cal Crutchlow. The other, currently with Colin Edwards, is destined for someone else, since there are strong rumours the popular Texan is heading back to the World superbike paddock.

In any case, Rossi has signed a two-year deal with Ducati to ride alongside Nicky Hayden, as current Ducati rider Casey Stoner moves to Honda. Lord knows the MotoGP championship needs something to make it interesting again, maybe Rossi in red will do the trick.

The story kicked off months ago when, it was alleged, Rossi confronted Yamaha with a 'it's him or me' style ultimatum over Jorge Lorenzo, Rossi's team mate at FIAT Yamaha. Yamaha clearly reckons that Lorenzo is the future and told Rossi he was a free agent.

At which point there was only really one option for Rossi – Ducati. Given that Jorge Lorenzo looks like a cert to win his first MotoGP title this year – he's already won seven races and has a lead of over 75 points – it's not too cruel to suggest that Yamaha is coming out the winner in this saga. Rossi did a fantastic job on the YZF-M1 but if anyone imagines that Lorenzo and his crew chief Ramon Forcada will be unable to keep the M1 near the front of the grid, they're deluded.

Valentino Rossi started the recovery after undergoing surgery on the shoulder injury he got in April and fell during exercise using the Motocross. These injuries complained of blocking along the 2010 season plus a serious injury (broken leg) in the practice session at Mugello, Italy.

Rossi underwent arthroscopic procedure. He suffered damage to cartilage and shoulder joints in the supraspinatus tendon and ligament glenoid.

Operations carried out in hospitals Cervesi Cattolica, by Dr. And Dr Alex Castagna. Giuseppe Porcellini, the doctors confirmed that Rossi should be a period of recovery for 90 days.

Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. will unveil the 2003 European model Yamaha Sport "YZF-R6" at the "Intermot Munich 2002" (3rd international motorcycle and scooter show) to be Munich, Germany for five days starting September 18. (Press introduction day is Sept. 17th.) This will be the first production model to feature parts cast by the new Yamaha "CF Aluminum Die casting Technology." After its debut at the Intermot show in September of 1998, the original YZF-R6 quickly won acclaim in Europe as "a supersport machine that offers full enjoyment of 600cc power" and became the new standard in the mid-class supersport category. The 2003 model represents first model change of the YZF-R6 in four years and was developed around the same original model concept while adding further refinement of cornering performance and even more exciting engine performance. The main changes in the new YZF-R6 include, (1) a new engine comprised of about 90% new parts, (2) fuel injection, (3) meets EU2 emissions standards, (4) first production motorcycle frame made exclusively of cast parts, (5) chassis parts made by Yamaha's new CF Aluminum Die Casting Technology rear frame and rear arm) and (6) styling that tells you at a glance this is the 2nd-generation YZF-R6.

Engine
1) New engine with 90% new parts including new-design pistons

The new YZF-R6 adopts a new liquid-cooled 4-stroke DOHC in-line 4-cylinder 4-valve engine with about 90% new parts including new forged pistons designed for optimum strength balance, new high-lift cams and a redesigned crank case. While maintaining the outstanding character of the existing engine based on the bore x stroke dimensions, compression ratio and the combustion chamber shape, the new engine is characterized by boosted performance across the full rpm range due to improvements such as optimized intake/exhaust efficiency and measures to reduce pumping-related horsepower loss. As a result, a power increase of about 3 hp has been achieved while maintaining the same maximum power output rpm of 13,000 rpm (while ram-air intake is in effect)

2) Liner-less direct plated cylinder

In order to reduce the resistance of the piston in motion, a new type of cylinder has been adopted which eliminates the cylinder sleeve and applies plating directly to the inner wall of a die-cast cylinder for what is called a "direct-plated cylinder." Elimination of the sleeve enables outstanding heat dissipation characteristics, good strength balance and a more precise cylinder design. What's more, increasing the strength of the land that holds the rings, optimizing the thickness of the top ring and revising the ring tension all contribute to more stable piston movement. All this helped in achieving a more consistent gas seal and excellent oil-consumption characteristics. Furthermore, the new crankcase design with enlarged passages between the cylinders reduces fluctuation in air volume due to the pumping action of the pistons, thus reducing pumping-related horsepower loss. This helps produce to outstanding response characteristics. Horsepower loss has also been reduced by various design measures like optimizing the crank balance to reduce the load on the crank journal.

3) Fuel Injection system with suction piston

In order to obtain both outstanding intake efficiency and good response, this model adopts the same suction-piston type fuel injection (FI) system that has won such high acclaim on the 2002 model YZF-R1. This system uses the motion of a free piston that moves in accordance with the air pressure fluctuations to regulate air intake flow from the low-speed range, thus making possible both linear throttle response that retains a natural (carburetor-like) intake feeling and the outstanding response and reliability of electronic control. This enables the new YZF-R6 to achieve acceleration characterized by a second acceleration curve beginning at 8,000 rpm and excellent top end power development that continues without stress past 12,000 rpm.

4) New-design intake system

To improve engine response in conjunction with the adoption of the new FI system, the air cleaner capacity has been increased (7.3 → 7.6 liters) along with the diameter of the throttle body (37 → 38 mm). The same "ram-air system" used on the existing model is adopted, and to accommodate the new FI system, the volumes of the intake air passages at the open and closed states have been optimized to produce even better perfor

Silverstone reveals new MotoGP layout

Silverstone has unveiled the provisional circuit layout for the British round of the MotoGP World Championship, which it will host from 2010. The most significant addition to the present layout will be a new section of track running from the approach at Abbey corner to an 'Arrowhead' section at the inside of Becketts. The Arrowhead will then join up with the existing National Straight before entry into the final complex, therefore missing out the present Bridge corner. The Arrowhead and its approach should provide an excellent chance for overtaking and will be surrounded by several new spectator areas. It will also be overlooked by the grandstand at Becketts, providing fans with an opportunity to see two sections of track from one vantage point. Both MotoGP and British Superbike riders will also be pleased to see that the plans include the moving of grandstands and safety barriers at Woodcote. This will enable the circuit to build a new run off area at the fast entry to Pit Straight and dispose of the unpopular slow chicane seen in WSBK and BSB, currently a necessity for safety purposes. As part of the 'bike-friendly' efforts, additional sections of track will also be laid at Chapel and Club. The new plans form part of a £5 million investment by Silverstone, with work set to be carried out between November 2009 and March 2010. In addition to changes to the track, improvements to spectator viewing facilities will include moving some of the existing grandstands to bring them closer to the track. “Silverstone is one of the easiest circuits to get in and out of in the world, we have sizeable hard-standing car parks, and the facilities for teams, media and fans are second to none,” said Richard Phillips, managing director of Silverstone Circuits Limited. “We are happy with the infrastructure, but we now have an opportunity to make some exciting changes to the circuit and fundamental improvements to the viewing experience for fans. “The new Arrowhead on the inside of Becketts will be a major new feature of the circuit. The fast approach and sharp left should provide plenty of opportunities to overtake, making it a real focal point for spectators. Made in response to the global financial crises and Kawasaki's factory withdraw, which has potentially reduced the 2009 MotoGP field to just four manufacturers and 17 riders, the six rule changes include the expected reduction in track and test time - plus a limit on engine changes - but also ban launch control, electronic suspension and ceramic composite materials for brake discs or pads. With the new racing season starting on April 12 and the 2009 machinery already built (click here for an insight into the aims and time constraints surrounding the new regulations) reducing running costs, recently described as 'huge' by LCR boss Lucio Cecchinello, was one area that could be most easily influenced. Maintenance and running costs will be lowered by cutting track time during a grand prix weekend, limiting post-race tests and extending engine life (during the second half of the season). GP track time will be reduced by cancelling the Friday morning free practice session (for all three classes) and reducing the three remaining MotoGP practice sessions - including qualifying - from one hour to 45 minutes. Warm-up time and race distance are unchanged. Post race testing will be allowed on just two occasions, after Catalunya (June 14) and Czech GP (August 16) and even then “test riders only are permitted.” Engine life will be extended by limiting each rider to five engines for the final eight rounds of 2009. “No changing of parts will be permitted except daily maintenance”, although no penalties for breaking the rule were announced.

Sete Gibernau and the Guinea Ecuatorial Team will miss next weekend's Qatar test after the Spaniard suffered 'a slight ligament tear in his left shoulder' during training yesterday (Thursday).

The double MotoGP World Championship runner-up's shoulder is still recovering from surgery to remove previous metalwork and, according to his team, the 'accumulation of physical exertion at the recent MotoGP tests in Malaysia and his demanding training programme' caused the ligament tear.

Doctor Ginebreda Marti of the Institut Universitari Dexeus in Barcelona diagnosed the injury and recommended "rest, in particular from physical exertion in order to avoid further injury."

Keen to avoid any major complications before his return to premier-class racing in a little over a month's time, Gibernau and the team agreed to cancel their participation in the upcoming test (March 1-3) so Sete can focus on a full and swift recovery.

The 36-year-old, returning to MotoGP after two seasons in retirement, had been twelfth fastest at Sepang, which was the first test of 2009.

Having now opted to miss Qatar, Gibernau will have just one more test session - at Jerez from March 28-29 - before the season-opening Qatar night race on April 12.

Practice time has been slashed and some electronic devices limited from the 2009 MotoGP season after the Grand Prix Commission ratified cost-cutting proposals today.
Friday morning practice has been cancelled for all three grand prix classes, and the remaining two MotoGP practice sessions plus qualifying have been shortened from one hour to 45 minutes. The 125cc and 250cc series will now have a sole qualifying session on a Saturday afternoon, with the former Friday qualifying sessions becoming practice.
Testing has been reduced too, with the regular post-race test days slimmed down to just two - at Catalunya and Brno. Only test riders will be allowed to run at these events.
Some technical changes have also been made, with electronic and hydraulic launch control systems, ceramic composite brakes, and electronic suspension systems all banned with immediate effect, and restrictions on engine use implemented for the latter part of the season.
For the eight rounds commencing with the Czech Grand Prix at Brno in August, each rider will be allowed to use no more than five engines in total.
The plans were submitted to motorcycle racing's governing body, the FIM, after being suggested by the MotoGP manufacturers during meetings in recent months.
Many in the sport have called for more radical cost-cutting measures to be taken from 2010, following the lead set by Formula One.
MotoGP costs have been in the spotlight since Kawasaki announced it was pulling its works team out of the championship. Efforts to keep the team in MotoGP as a private entry - and therefore maintain a 19-bike field - are ongoing.

"Kami jadi tahu pasar mana yang akan dibidik, dan kelemahan kami akan menjadi lebih jelas," ujarnya di Ritz Carlton Pacific Place, Jakarta, Selasa (15/4/2008).

Strategi sebelumnya, Samsung mengeluarkan produk berdasarkan fitur. Nah, kali ini menurut Agus Samsung membuat enam kategori khusus yaitu: style, multimedia, infotainment, bisnis, connected dan essential. Pembagian tersebut dilakukan berdasarkan survey terhadap 20.000 pelanggan yang tersebar di lima benua dan 23 negara, termasuk Indonesia.

Menurut Hee-Hong Park, Managing Director Samsung Electronics Indonesia, dalam waktu tiga tahun Samsung akan menjadi produsen ponsel nomor satu di dunia. "Kami optimistis, apalagi dengan kepemimpinan presiden baru di divisi mobile Samsung yang berpengalaman membawa divisi televisi menjadi nomor satu," ujarnya.

Model terbaru ini dibagi menjadi enam kategori mulai dari gaya, multimedia, infotainment, bisnis, sosial, dan esensial. San Antorium was Lowlife's fourth album, released in 1991 in Scotland on Nightshift Records. The LP was recorded at Tower Studios in Glasgow, Scotland. LAS CRUCES — Too many members of the military have returned from combat only to die on their motorcycles.

White Sands Missile Range's "Wolf Pack" riding club aims to change that.

"We've got soldiers overseas coming back with a pocketful of money," said retired Army Sgt. 1st Class Sammie Hubbard, motorcycle safety program manager at WSMR. "This is prime riding weather. They're going to go out and buy the biggest, baddest motorcycle they can get ... Out of a unit of 4,000 soldiers, 1,000 are normally going to be motorcycle riders."

Navy Gunner's Mate 2nd Class Nick Walker, 23, got back from Iraq in January and has already put 4,500 miles on his 2006 Yamaha R6 Anniversary Edition. He said the allure of motorcycles among veterans is simple: one easy purchase fulfills a need for thrills.

"You've got money," Walker said. "When you're over there, most guys are single, so they've got nothing to spend money on. The biggest issue is, you survive combat and think you're bulletproof. You lose that adrenaline rush."

A motorcycle rider is in the hospital after hitting a deer early this morning in south Sedgwick County.

It happened shortly before 6 a.m. at the intersection of 71st St. S. and 55th St. W., just west of Haysville.

The motorcycle rider was traveling at a fairly high rate of speed when she hit the deer. The impact caused the rider to roll 30 to 40 feet. She was wearing a helmet.

The rider was originally diagnosed in serious condition, but was downgraded to critical on the way to the hospital after she started having seizures.

Tips on buying and driving a motorcycle or scooter

Anxious to reduce your fuel costs and looking to a motorcycle or scooter? If you can accept the significant safety risks, but are not sure where to start, here are some tips to aid your purchase and use.

Do I need a license? Motorcyclists usually require a special license. Check with your local DMV to determine operator age or engine size restrictions. In some states, a scooter that displaces less than 50cc requires only a vehicle license to operate, not a motorcycle license. New York State for example, requires a special license when the top speed of the scooter or motorcycle goes above 30 mph. Below that, you don’t need a special license, but there are limitations on where it can be operated. Vehicles that go below 30 mph need to stay in the right lane or shoulder. Other states require completion of a motorcycle training course. Check with your local DMV as the laws vary based on the state in which you live.

How to learn to ride? A training class for motorcycles or scooters is highly recommended, especially for first-time riders. Beyond learning balance, the use of throttle, brakes, and cornering are all very different from driving an automobile. Professional instructors can teach proper, safe riding techniques, explaining such things as how to ride in a lane and how to remain visible to other vehicles.

What about insurance? You need insurance to drive a motorcycle or scooter, and it’s less expensive than insuring a car. You can start by checking with your current vehicle insurer to see if they offer insurance. You must register the vehicle with the DMV, as well.

Is a helmet required? Helmet laws vary in each state. Currently, only 20 states require one for everyone, but other states require them by age. Your local DMV will be able to help. Consumer Reports recommends full-face helmet use for everyone. Head injury is the leading cause of death in motorcycle crashes. In 2006, 41 percent of motorcycle deaths were from those not wearing a helmet. When purchasing a helmet, look for ones that are compliant with the Department of Transportation standards (Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 218).

What gear is important? In addition to buying the bike/scooter, you need to determine what gear is necessary. Besides a helmet, a face shield will help protect you against the elements (which can include dust, wind, rain, pebbles, and bugs). Glasses or goggles are not as effective as a full-face shield. Motorcycle-specific jackets, pants, boots, and gloves are also necessary to protect you in the event of a crash and from the heat, cold, debris, or mechanical elements on the bike. Bright colors can help make you more visible. Investing in proper motorcycle gear can provide significant protection, particularly from road rash, over regular street clothes.

Consider parking. Before you purchase that motor bike for your commute, consider where you will park. In most cities, you can park on the street like cars, but there is the risk of the vehicle being knocked over or vandalized. You may also get a ticket if you try to park in between designated spaces. In the city of Chicago, for example, motorcycles and scooters must be parked perpendicular to the street. Check with your local town/city for the guidelines. If you decide you want to be safe and park at a garage or lot, make sure that the garage allows them and check the fees—they may be the same as passenger cars.
